WELDING METHODS

Welding Technologies Available

Six proven welding processes, each selected and matched to your material, joint design, and production requirements by our partner engineers.

TIG Welding

TIG welding (GTAW) is a highly precise process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. It is ideal for stainless steel, aluminum, and visible components that require a clean, spatter-free appearance and strict dimensional stability. This method offers exceptional control for intricate, high-quality, and structurally critical joints.

Technical Specifications

ENGINEERING REFERENCE

Design Guidelines for Welded Assemblies

Follow these best practices to reduce manufacturing cost, minimize distortion, and ensure your welded construction meets EN 1090-2 requirements.

Clean Drafting & General Weld Notes

Reduce Drawing Clutter
Clean Drawing approach

Adopt general notes instead of individual weld symbols on every joint to simplify fabrication drawings.

Quality Class: Standard
ISO 5817 Class C

Specify Class C for standard structural frames to reduce unnecessary over-inspection.

Quality Class: Critical
ISO 5817 Class B

Reserve Class B for fatigue-loaded joints and safety-critical structural nodes only.

Weld Sizing & Heat Input Control

Avoid Overwelding
4-5 mm fillet standard

Larger welds increase heat input, distortion, and cost. A standard 4 mm or 5 mm fillet is usually sufficient.

Prioritize Fillet Welds
Use wherever possible

Fillet welds avoid expensive edge preparation and reduce the need for non-destructive testing (NDT).

Heat Input
Control per WPS

Follow the qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) to manage heat input and minimize distortion.

Joint Accessibility & EN 1090 Compliance

Torch Clearance
Design for access

Ensure physical space for proper MIG/MAG torch angling at every joint location.

Visual Testing (VT)
100% per EN 1090-2

EN 1090-2 requires 100% visual testing on all welds, so joints must be accessible for evaluation.

NDT Access
Plan for UT / MT

Where ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing is required, ensure probe access in the design phase.

Smart Component Preparation

Pre-Machining Plates
Process before welding

Fully process plates (laser cut, drill, countersink) before assembly to avoid post-weld machining.

Self-Locating Geometry
Alignment features

Incorporate tabs, slots, and edge geometries to aid fitters and reduce manual measuring during fit-up.

Edge Preparation
Per WPS requirements

Specify bevel angles and root gaps according to the qualified welding procedure to ensure consistent penetration.

Managing Structural Distortion

Symmetrical Weld Placement
Balance around neutral axis

Distribute welds symmetrically around the neutral axis to balance shrinkage forces and minimize warpage.

Staggered Welding
Intermittent technique

Allow tolerances for intermittent (staggered) welding techniques to control cumulative distortion.

Pre-Set / Pre-Camber
Compensate for shrinkage

Pre-set components in the opposite direction of expected distortion so the final assembly is within tolerance.

Optimal Joint Selection

Favor Tee & Lap Joints
Recommended default

Tee and lap joints naturally accommodate fillet welds and are cost-effective for standard structural connections.

Limit Butt & Edge Joints
Critical nodes only

Reserve butt and edge joints for high-load or fatigue-critical areas due to higher preparation and NDT costs.

Basic Joint Types
Butt, Corner, Edge, Tee, Lap

Understand the five fundamental joint types and select the most appropriate one for each connection in the design.
